The Americas—consisting of Northern America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America—have seen widespread declines in fertility in the past half century along with continued modest population growth. The region’s total fertility rate is currently below replacement level at 1.9 and ranges from 1.7 in Northern America to 2.2 in Central America. A total fertility rate of 2.1 is replacement level fertility, the average number of children a couple needs to have to replace themselves. The population of the Americas is expected to see an increase of 17% from 1.0 billion in 2020 to 1.2 billion in 2050. This population increase ranges from 7% in the Caribbean to 21% in Central America. The Americas are also experiencing significant population aging. The current share of older adults ages 65 and older is 11%, ranging from 7% in Central America to 17% in Northern America.
